How did your hometown get its name?HistOrigin®. The history app for travelers speaks the origin story of the communities you travel around and through, automatically, as you drive the roads of America.
A travel app in every sense of the word, the HistOrigin® app provides an on-going narration of the origins of local communities to the traveler looking for a different form of mobile entertainment.
The HistOrigin® project is an on-going effort to collect the origin stories of all cities, towns, villages, burgs, boroughs and hamlets of the United States of America and to make them easily accessible to the public in the form of a mobile app to be used primarily while in a vehicle.
.The HistOrigin® travel apps primary function is to speak the origin story of a community. The origin story answers questions like, how did a town get its name, who were the first people to settle on the land. What was the reason to make a village or a town on this land. What made the area attractive. Who were the people involved in organizing the community. Were they ambitious citizens and settlers, land barons?
HOW IT WORKS
HistOrigin® functions in 2 modes. TRAVEL MODE and EXPLORE MODE
TRAVEL MODE - When the HistOrigin® app is started, it is in TRAVEL MODE by default. No action is necessary in TRAVEL MODE. Once started, your position is identified by GPS and indicated on the displayed map. An imaginary circle is drawn around your position and any community that we have a story for, that falls within this imaginary circle, is spoken to you using your mobile devices simulated voice. As you move, your position is updated and additional stories are spoken to you as community are encountered.
EXPLORE MODE - Switching to EXPLORE MODE in the HistOrigin® travel app, clears the GPS tracking and displays map markers of all communities in the map view that have origin stories written into the HistOrigin® database . If you click on any map marker, indicated as a state flag, an infobox is opened with options to view the story for that community, or have it spoken to you by the simulated voice.
The HistOrigin® project was started as a desire to learn the origins of the communities of the United States of America and present them as a travel app for the public in an automated way that would be both entertaining and educational.
There are currently 2000+ stories for communities within the states of New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Users in these states will be able to experience the full functionality of the HistOrigin® app.
The National Historical Marker database has also been added as a table in the HistOrigin® travel app. Users of the HistOrigin® Premium version have the ability to filter out the display of Historical Markers.
PLEASE NOTE. THERE CURRENTLY MAY NOT BE A CITY TOWN VILLAGE HISTORY story FOR YOUR HOMETOWN. However, you will see Historical Markers for the entire nation.
Our database grows every day and our goal is to obtain the Origin Story for every community in the United States.
You can help. Do you know your village history or the origin story for your community? We have provided a form that allows users to add a origin story to our database. You can access the form from within the HistOrigin® app or the historigin.com website. If you have a story to share, we are interested in hearing from you. Help us build HistOrigin® into a national treasure.
Users of HistOrigin® will be unable to filter out/remove the display of Historical Markers. The HistOrigin® app also display's commercial ads.
